Christmas trees, gay rights, Klamath River and liquor sales: Oregon Political Roundup

OregonStateSeal.jpgTaylor Swift apparently rocked the country music world last night and this morning Portland Mayor Sam Adams gave Occupy Portland until 12:01 a.m. Sunday to clear out of downtown parks.

For those readers interested in state political news, we have your roundup right here:

1st Congressional District: The real race kicks off now that Republicans have elected Rob Cornilles and Democrats have picked Suzanne Bonamici in this week's special primary election. Cornilles isn't afraid to bring up the specter of disgraced Democratic Rep. David Wu, whose resignation in August opened up the seat. The O's editorial board tells both candidates to step up the campaign specifics.

O Christmas trees: PolitiFact Oregon spent most of yesterday chasing down fast-growing Internet claims about President Barack Obama's Grinch-like tax on Christsmas trees, which we love. Oregon is the top grower of real holiday trees.

Equal marriage: Gay rights advocates say they won't put a measure on the 2012 ballot, citing the expense of a statewide campaign.

Klamath River basin: Landmark legislation introduced by Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., today "would clear the way to remove four dams, restore habitat for salmon and other wildlife, and provide a more predictable future for farmers who rely on the river to irrigate crops." But Congress has to sign off.

School levies:
OPB's Think Out Loud had a segment this morning on three school funding measures that failed in Oregon, including an operating levy in Beaverton.

Liquor sales: Could Oregon be next in the move to banish state-run liquor stores? Washington voters did just that in Tuesday's election.
