Christmas is just around the corner. It's crucial to get your decorating started early in the season. If you're like me, the idea of decorating for Christmas gives me anxiety. However, Christmas lights don't have to be nearly as difficult as you think they are. There are some great ideas out there. Whether you want to go all out and be seen from Santa's sleigh high in the sky, or if you just want to add a little extra holiday spirit to the neighborhood, there's something out there for you.

Traditional Christmas Lights

Traditional Christmas lights are obviously the favored decoration for the holiday season. These truly will get your house looking like Christmas. Hanging lights along the line of the roof always looks beautiful. However, if you're not feeling up to stringing lights from the roof because you have a two story, or because it's just plain hard, here are some additional ideas. String lights around windows and doors. Framing the windows and doors gives your home a clean look while remaining festive. Hang lights from the trees—even if they aren't fir trees. Another easy method to decorating the yard is to wrap lights around poles, lampposts, and the trunk of a tree. Try laying lights along pathways or the ridge of the garden. There are simply no wrong ways to put up Christmas lights.

Colored spotlights

Spotlights are possibly the easiest way to light up your house for the Christmas season. Spotlights and flood lights are available in a range of colors. Simply shining a green or red light on the side of the house will give your home plenty of holiday spirit. If you aren't interested in using colored spotlights to decorate the exterior of your home, try using just traditional spotlights instead. If you have a nativity scene, reindeer, or Santa's sleigh that you want to place in your backyard, a spotlight is the best way to draw attention to this. Spotlights can make it so that you can put any kind of decoration on the roof, and it will still be visible from the ground. Using spotlights to illuminate key decorations instead of using traditional strands of Christmas lights is also a great way to save money on your energy bill at Christmas.

Decorate Indoors

Who said you should only illuminate the outside of your home at Christmas? Isn't the inside of your home where your Christmas parties will be hosted and where your family will open gifts on Christmas day?  Candles add a dramatic mood to your indoors. Putting lights or candles in decorative paper bags will create a cool effect for both the indoors and outdoors of your home. Stringing white lights across the ceilings, or making patterns on the walls is a beautiful effect that looks great in any home. Christmas lamps are a sometimes a difficult find, but they are a wonderful addition to your décor.

Great Texas A&M Jerseys for Christmas 2011

Want to make that football fan on your gift list really happy this Christmas? Think about giving a gift that will allow him (or her) to really demonstrate team loyalty -- buy a football jersey of his favorite college team.

This is a gift that keeps on giving year-round. The nice thing about buying a replica college jersey is that prices won't break your budget.

Here are five picks from my favorite college team, Texas A&M:

Adidas Texas A&M Aggies Replica Jersey. This Adidas replica jersey is made of breathable red mesh material, making it wearable even when the weather is warm, which it usually is in Aggie country, and has screen printed numbers and NCAA team graphics. It's one of the more expensive of the Aggie jerseys at $60, but if you're an Aggie fan, it's worth every penny.

[For more college football gear, check out the Yahoo! Sports shop.]

Texas A&M Aggies Kids Nike Jersey. Made by Nike, this jersey come in size 5, so it's for that small Aggie on your Christmas list. It comes in red, and is made of a lightweight material that breathes. At $25, it's an inexpensive way to recognize that future star linebacker in your family.

Texas A&M Aggies Youth Rivalry Replica Jersey. Another hit with the younger set, this jersey comes in the Aggies' maroon and sells for $45.

Adidas Texas A&M Aggies #1 Replica Jersey. This jersey, in maroon, and with the number 1, is sure to be a hit for the wanna-be' quarterback, or for the former collegiate player who still thinks he got cheated when he didn't make the all-star team. Like most of the Aggie jerseys, it's made of fabric that allows the body to breath in warm temperatures, and can be had for $60.

Adidas Texas A&M Aggies #1 Replica Jersey-White. Made of 100% polyester, with a heavyweight mesh body, this white jersey with maroon trim has all the accouterments the "real" players wear on the field except the pads. At $40, it's a bargain.

I grew up in Aggie country, and even during their losing seasons have been a loyal and consistent supporter. They aren't as sexy as the University of Texas Longhorns, but with one national title and 18 conference titles since 1939, they exemplify the true grit that says 'Texans don't quit.'

As news of Frankie Cocozza’s departure from the X Factor emerged yesterday, Marks & Spencer bosses were acting quickly to remove the disgraced contestant from its Christmas adverts.

Cocozza, who made a name for himself on the show for all the wrong reasons, was axed for ‘breaking a golden rule’ thought to be the use of cocaine.

Marks & Spencer removed Frankie Cocozza from its X Factor Christmas adverts with immediate effect. M&S, which has a deal worth ‘several millions’ with the ITV show, would not comment on Cocozza’s departure however made it clear that the partnership is with the X Factor rather than individual contestants.

“Now that Frankie has departed the show he will not appear in the future edit,” revealed a spokesman for Marks & Spencer. “We always said we would keep editing it in the run-up to final so that we only highlighted the remaining contestants.”

frankie3_1404257a.jpg

Frankie was constantly seen out with friends drinking throughout the competition

The updated version of the Christmas advert was sent to television channels last night and the new edit is already being broadcast.

“Frankie won’t be in it, neither will The Risk or Johnny Robinson, who also went out at the weekend,” confirmed M&S. The company had nothing further to add to the official statement released by X Factor producers.

Phone and broadband company TalkTalk also has a three-year sponsorship deal with X Factor, which could be worth as much as £20million. It includes sponsorship of the TV show and tour.

With such huge sponsorship deals at stake, X Factor producers need to be extremely careful about the contestants they are promoting on the show. Cocozza was accused of being a bad role model during his time in the competition and this could have been an influencing factor in his dismissal from the programme.

-On the Beach say a new guide to the best Christmas markets on the continent will enhance family holidays this festive season-

The UK's leading online travel agency On the Beach say that a new guide to the best Christmas markets in Europe could help families get the most out of their winter sun holidays during this year's festive season.

The guide aims to help Brits heading to the continent this winter choose between all the great Christmas markets and find the ones that best suit their seasonal shopping needs. The list was put together by Insight Guides who have a reputation for producing high quality visual guide books; On the Beach say the comprehensive nature of this latest guide means that even Brits enjoying winter sun and family holidays in less festive regions will be able to find a Christmas market to suit them.

15m boost for Christmas post

Published on Mon Nov 07 09:53:29 GMT 2011

Royal Mail is to set up nine sites across the country, including one in Peterborough, to handle the huge Christmas postbag this year.

The postal group is investing an extra £15 million in the sites as it gears up to deliver an estimated two billion items over the festive season.

The move follows the continued growth of online shopping, as well as preparing for any repeat of the severe weather conditions that hit services last year.

Mark Higson, Royal Mail's managing director of operations and modernisation, said: "Christmas is the busiest time of year for Royal Mail and our customers. On peak days we handle around 130 million items - around double our normal average daily mailbag of 62 million items.

"Royal Mail has invested an additional £15 million to increase our scale and improve our flexibility during this important time of year for our customers.

"As we do every year, we encourage people to post early and order presents early to help us spread the workload of handling around two billion items in the run-up to Christmas."

The new "packet hubs" will open in the coming weeks in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Swansea, Bristol, Peterborough, Manchester, Swindon, Nuneaton and Watford.

Nigel Woods of Consumer Focus said: "People across the country experienced frustrating delays to their Christmas post last winter, so it is good to see Royal Mail taking steps to stop this happening again this year with additional investment and a dedicated packet network.

"Another spell of bad weather in December could really test Royal Mail's ability to deliver our post on time.

"Even though it still seems a long way off, we would remind people to start thinking about putting in their online orders for presents, and sending their Christmas post to family and friends in advance. Avoiding leaving it to the last minute can help save much-needed extra cash and avoid unwanted stress."

Donations needed for Christmas

Editor:

As you know there are many families in need this year. It is probably the worst economic time since the Great Depression.

For this reason, we are asking readers to please open your hearts and wallet to help our local families and children to have a Merry Christmas. Consider a generous contribution to the Buckeye Lake Commuity Celebration Committee, Christmas Fund, which provides Christmas for Buckeye Lake Area Families. The area includes Licking, Fairfield, and Perry counties. You may contribute money or new toys or new clothing.

In 2010,with community and business support, more than 400 coats, hats, gloves, mittens, and scarves, as well as Christmas toys for children were handed out. Seventeen families were adopted with a total of 42 children! The committee consists of only volunteers. We receive no public funding. At our first event in 2006, we found children wrapped in blankets to come to get their Christmas gifts. After that the committee decided that coats, hats, and gloves should be a priority

Toys for Tots are no longer represented in this area, BLCCC volunteer organization is dedicated exclusively to Christmas in the Buckeye Lake Community. Several fundraising events support our efforts including,Kar Shoz for the Kidz, Memorial Day Parade, Poker Run, and entertainment books.

If you would like to be a volunteer that day, please email the BLCCC or call the Buckeye Lake Museum at 740-929-1998.

You may contribute money, new toys or new coats. Please help. Every dollar counts this year.

Bless you all!

The Buckeye Lake Community Celebration Committee

TOWIE stakes claim on Christmas hit

12:30pm Thursday 10th November 2011

The Only Way Is Essex stars are planning to make their mark on the Christmas charts with their charity single Last Christmas.

The cast members of the Bafta-winning ITV2 show, including Joey Essex and Jessica Wright, bring festive cheer with their cover of the Wham! hit - while Yazz And The Plastic Population's The Only Way Is Up has been recorded on the B-side.

"It's something different for us and the cast is all together. It's a lot of fun. If it goes to number one, well, it's gonna be crazy," said Joey.

Jessica added: "It's really exciting. I love singing, it's always been one of my dreams. Everyone's getting in the Christmas spirit."

One hundred per cent of the profits from the single, which will be released on December 18, will go to Text SANTA, a new charity set up by ITV to raise money and awareness for various charities including Crisis, Samaritans and Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Bookmakers Ladbrokes have already offered odds of 6/1 for the TOWIE cast to hit the number one spot, while X Factor frontrunner Marcus Collins is the current favourite to take the Christmas crown at 3/1.

M & S cut x-rated former X-Factor 'star' Frankie from Christmas ad

It’s been a bad couple of days for Frankie Cocozza. First, the X-Factor chiefs turf him off the show, and then Marks & Spencers remove his mug from their much-publicised Christmas TV ad.

M & S put together a lavish production which debuted at the weekend, in which several stars of the show – including evictees such as The Risk – sang “When You Wish Upon A Star”.

Controversial Pete Doherty wannabe Frankie Cocozza was included in the ad but the retail chain has acted decisively following the tuneless and talentless teen’s chop from the show on Wednesday.

The only trouble is that they didn’t go far enough – in the new version of the ad, you don’t get to see Frankie attempt to sing, but you can still hear his aural equivalent of a scrawl.

M & S insist that the ad was always going to be edited as the show progressed, although it does look like they were scrambling over themselves to remove sight of Frankie after this week’s misdemeanour.

If you can stomach it, you can find the ad in full over on YouTube.

Instead, we’ll give you something much easier on the ear:

Alistair Daly, Marketing Director of On the Beach, comments: "At On the Beach we often see a surge of bookings around the Christmas period as families look to get away from the wet and wild winter weather of Great Britain and unwrap their presents in the sunshine. In the past they may have felt dissuaded from taking advantage of all the great events and markets taking place on the continent during November and December due to the lack of information on what might be going on near their holiday destination.

"Although we commonly associate Christmas time with snow and ice, the reality is that Britain is often wet and windy over the holidays. Insight Guides' latest guide will enable travellers in even the most balmy regions of Europe to enjoy a festive family holiday with a sunny twist. These trips will make this Christmas one that the whole family is sure to remember for years to come."

Know your overseas shopping limits this Christmas

Don’t get hit by unexpected charges when you are shopping for Christmas bargains this year, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has advised.

If you are going abroad to do Christmas shopping, or buying goods online from non-EU countries, you need to know how much you can buy before you have to pay import duty or VAT.

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) Head of Customs Policy, Angela Shephard, said: “We know many people like to go abroad at this time to buy their Christmas gifts, or buy online from non-EU countries, and think that the ‘cheaper’ price they see is always the price they finally pay.

“HMRC is keen to remind the general public how much they can actually bring back from abroad or buy from an online overseas seller without having to pay import duty or VAT.

“You don’t want to be faced with unexpected extra charges, when you thought you had found a bargain.”

Arriving in the UK by commercial sea or air transport from a non-EU country, you can bring in up to £390 worth of goods for personal use without paying customs duty or VAT (excluding tobacco and alcohol, which have separate allowances, and fuel). Arriving by other means, including by private plane or boat for pleasure purposes, you can bring in goods up to the value of £270. Above these allowances and up to £630, there is a duty flat rate of 2.5 per cent.Should you buy goods over the internet or by mail order from outside the EU, you will have to pay VAT if the value of the package is over £15.If the goods are over £135 in value, customs duty may also be due, although this will depend on what they are and where they have been sent from. Where, however, the actual amount of duty due is less than £9, this will not be charged. If someone sends you a gift from outside the EU, import VAT will only be due if the package is valued at over £40. To qualify as a gift, the item must be sent from one private individual to another, with no money changing hands.
Please note that excise duty is always due on all alcohol and tobacco products purchased online or by mail order. If you are thinking of going across the Channel to replenish beers, wines, spirits or tobacco products, there are no limits on the amounts of duty and tax paid goods you can bring back personally from another EU country, as long as they are for your own use. You may, however, be asked questions at the UK border if you have more than: 110 litres of beer, 90 litres of wine, 10 litres of spirits 20 litres of fortified wines, 800 cigarettes, 200 cigars, 400 cigarillos or 1kg of tobacco to establish these quantities are genuinely for your own use.

Forget Santa Claus, reindeer are now the Christmas party animals

Reindeer have become the must have accessory at Christmas parties and even at weddings.

They have even overtaken Santa as the most searched for Christmas term on Google.

One couple who left the capital to keep a herd of 20 say they are inundated with bookings, having delivered a bride to her wedding in a sleigh pulled by reindeer.

Angie Flint, a former new media company director, and Martin Flint, an ex-Thames Valley policeman, said the animals had proved hugely popular since they bought them six years ago to their Leicestershire farm.

"We really wanted to get out of London once we had kids," said Mrs Flint, 50. "Initially we had ponies, but then we talked to some Swedish friends about reindeer and decided to get some." The family, including children James, nine, and Jessica, 12, have been looking after four newborns. "We didn't actually plan to breed them, it just kind of happened," she said.

"We've been busy since August, and most of our bookings are in central London," said Mrs Flint, who runs Real Reindeer Ltd. "We take 10 of the males out, usually in teams of two or four, and they seem to really enjoy the travelling - they just sit down in the livestock trailer and relax.

"We've done a lot of winter weddings, with everything from having the reindeers greeting the guests at the reception to delivering the bride in a sleigh pulled by reindeer.

"However, we're also really popular at Christmas parties, and meet and greets. We've done Celebrity Come Dine With Me, and even visited Downing Street."

Peter Fitzgerald, sales director at Google UK, said: "Over the last two years searches for reindeer have overtaken searches for Father Christmas by five per cent."

The farm has only ever advertised online with Google. Reindeer, also known as caribou, first appeared pulling a sleigh in the 1823 poem A Visit From St Nicholas, although Donner and Blitzen were initially called Dunder and Blixem.

Audubon's Annual Christmas Bird Count

Evening Grosbeak - Damian FaganEvening Grosbeak - Damian FaganThe Christmas Bird Count sponsored by the National Audubon Society represents the longest running citizen-science project in North America.

Each year between mid-December and early January, birdwatchers can participate in a citizen science project called the Christmas Bird Count. Often called the "CBC," this activity provides a snapshot of winter bird populations across North America, as well as portions of Central and South America.

First known as the "Christmas Bird Census," this count started in 1900. Organized by Frank Chapman of the then fledgling National Audubon Society, this Christmas Day event focused on counting, not shooting, birds. At the beginning of the 20th century, conservationists were becoming alarmed at the unregulated killing of birds for food markets and the millinery industry. During the Christmas holidays some people participated in a Christmas "Side Hunt," so called because the groups chose sides and spent the day bagging birds and animals. The biggest pile of feathers and fur won. The Christmas Bird Census offered a new, nonconsumptive way to enjoy birds and wildlife.

The National Audubon Society (NAS) sponsors the Christmas Bird Count, but local chapters of NAS or other birding groups organize their area's particular count. Often one or two people serve as the count compilers, organizing teams of birdwatchers and assigning them areas within the count circle. The compilers also gather all the data and submit the information to National Audubon. Everyone is invited to participate, and novice birdwatchers are often paired up with more experienced birders. The $5 cost to participate helps with the printing of the final results of all the counts. The frequently asked questions page on the Audubon website provides information about joining a count.

During the 2009-2010 count, which marked the CBC's 100th anniversary, over 2,150 counts were conducted, and over 60,000 birders participated. Counts occurred in all 50 states and Canadian provinces, as well as in other countries.

For birders that cannot get out into the field to view birds, they can still participate by watching birds at their outdoor feeders. Feeder watchers record the different species and highest numbers observed at a given time. Watching bird feeders is a great way for birders to join in the fun of the CBC even if they are limited to indoor activities.

One group of birds that requires some special attention during the CBC are owls. Although these nocturnal birds may be observed during the day at roost sites, there is often a team or two for each count that goes out in the pre-dawn darkness to search for owls. There is something magical about hearing an owl's hoots in the dark.

The count period for the 2011-2012 Christmas Bird Count is December 14 to January 5. Though the first official count day is December 17, the three days prior and three days after the count day form what is called "count week." Birds observed during these days before and after the count day are applied only towards the CBC's species total. The count week allows for sightings of individuals birds or passing flocks to be counted towards the total, but that were missed on the official count day. Many CBCs are scheduled for different days during the count period to provide opportunities for birders to participate in one or more counts.
